Media Mixup

July 15, 2011

My son loves anything to do with maps, media and mass transportation. Though at times, it can be overwhelming for a 5-year-old.  The other day we were flipping through his atlas when this conversation ensued:

Theo “This is a map of the United States.”
Scott “Correct.”
Theo “And New York is the biggest city in the United States.”
Scott “Yep, that’s right.”
Theo “The city is also filled with skyscrapers.”
Scott “You’ve been there, do you remember seeing the buildings?”
Theo ” A little.  I heard there used to be two really big ones, but they were destroyed by airplanes.”
Scott  “Do you know what happened?”
Theo leans in with secrecy and says in a low whisper “No, but apparently it was Dominique Strauss-Kahn that did it.”

Rumble Tumble

Every Monday of the past academic year, Theo had an after-school class where kids his age worked on the fundamentals of gymnastics.  Parents attended the last session to see their child perform the practiced routines.  The kids flipped, flung, flew, and (occasionally) fell through the program with determination as the proud public cheered them on.  The highlight for Theo came at the end when Béla Károlyi carried him to the podium to receive his certificate.

Kermesse

July 1, 2011

Last Friday was Theo’s kermesse (school carnival).  As I volunteered at the “Jolly Jumper” booth, Theo enjoyed walking around with his mom and baby sister.  He got his face painted as a snake (though I referred to him as “Shrek eats a tomato”), kicked goals and threw socks  at cans.  He collected enough tickets to purchase what every 5-year old boy needs: a squirt gun and a soccer ball.

Hit Me With Your Best Shot

Today was Theo’s class picnic at a local park.  Anne-Laure, Ella and I were able to attend, so it was a nice family outing. The 22 kids had a great time eating, playing and running through the park. A soccer game started at one point and Theo was goalie for his team.  Nothin’ got past him.  Allez mon fils!

I finally finished making the changes to Duncan Soup.  With the arrival of Ella, it seemed to be a good time to bring things up to speed for posting pictures and videos.  The new site is integrated with Facebook, Twitter and Flickr (Allowing one to follow phrases and photos).  A good way to kick things off is with this humorous video of Theo doing the “D.P. Butt Dance”.   Call me if you don’t laugh.
